AlbumArte returns to the MAXXI with the site-specific performance Choreography for the Running Male by Lithuanian and Dutch by adoption artist Eglė Budvytytė taking place at MAXXI Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo on Saturday 14th October 2017 at 3.00 p.m. The performance is part of the museum program for the 13° Giornata del Contemporaneo AMACI.
The performance is characterized by a mobile and dynamic structure that changes and flourishes every time it is presented in a new environment. Nine performers, in a silent march, will run along the streets of the Flaminio district, starting from MAXXI square. These men will perform unusual gestures with extreme firmness and composure, resembling a military unit, where control and rigidity are fundamental requirements. The performance will also convey ideas of guilt, seduction and disguise.
The performance is part of Eglė Budvytytė’s solo exhibition Long time between the eyelash and the brain, curated by Benedetta Carpi De Resmini ongoing in AlbumArte until November the 11th. The show presents for the first time in Italy a selection of video-artwork focuses on unusual situations and contexts placed alongside mundane elements, thus producing short circuits between reality and fiction, opening up questions regarding the role of the subject in relation to wider reflections on collective society.
Choreography for the Running Male has received the patronage of the Netherlands Embassy in Rome and the Republic of Lithuanian Embassy in The Italian Republic; the performance was developed by AlbumArte with the support of Mondriaan Fonds, in collaboration with MAXXI – Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo and in partnership with the Lithuanian Culture Institute.
Eglė Budvytytė (Lithuania, 1981) lives in both Vilnius and Amsterdam. Her production involves video and performance pieces that explore the relation between the body, architecture, the environment and the public. Starting from the choreographies of different performers, she plays with the context of representation, exploring the body’s ability to challenge conventional behaviours and implicit normative narratives within public spaces. Her works have been presented at Liste, Basel; Art Dubai commissions 2017, the 19° Sydney Biennial, De Appel Arts Centre, CAC in Vilnius and at the Stedeljik Museum of Amsterdam. Eglė has also been artist-in- residence at Le Pavillon, Palais de Tokyo (Paris, 2012), and at WIELS Contemporary Art Centre (Brussels, 2013).
