MAXXI National Museum of 21st Century Arts | Centro Archivi
via Guido Reni, 4/a – Rome

On Saturday 12th October 2019, on the occasion of the 15th Day of Contemporary Art organised by the Association of Italian Museums of Contemporary Art (AMACI), MAXXI, the National Museum of 21st Century Arts at the Centro Archivi will host the performance The Fragment as a Proverb by the Lithuanian artist Kristina Inčiūraitė, supported by the Lithuanian Council for Culture, i-Portunus (a project selected and supported by the Creative Europe Programme) and Lithuanian Culture Institute.
The Fragment as a Proverb is a musical performance, with the participation of the whistling virtuoso Mariko Takagi, and the Elements of the Choir of Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, led by the choirmaster Massimiliano Tonsini.

The Fragment as a Proverb invites to listen to different fragments of popular songs and analyse personal and collective memory. Today’s audio-visual technologies, like instruments of capitalist marketing, control and shape the choices made by society. In our technologised culture, song recordings have become widespread, and by being constantly repeated, they have become part of our memory. Agnès Jaoui, the screenwriter of Alain Resnais’ film Same Old Song (On connait les chanson, 1997), once said that by gathering popular songs for the film, she used fragments of songs like proverbs. According to her, the commonplaces rooted in the words of popular songs summarise feelings, and at the same time they impoverish them.
Kristina Inčiūraitė amplifies this impoverishment by using an even more reduced form of song (humming or whistling) in this performance. However, she tries to transform this ‘impoverished’ experience into ‘enriched’ experience by choosing an intimate way of presenting these tunes.
The tune raises questions about our social behaviour. What do we, singers and listeners, have in common? Do we share similar emotions and experiences?
The musical performance was created in 2014 and is going to be presented in Italy for the first time.
After the performance, the catalogue of the solo exhibition Reflecting Women by the artist will be presented. The exhibition in AlbumArte (ongoing till the 26th of October, 2019) is curated by Benedetta Carpi De Resmini.
The catalogue is published by Iacobelli Editore (October, 2019).
The event will be attended also by the authors of the catalogue: Cristina Dinello Cobianchi (Founder and President of AlbumArte), Claudio Libero Pisano (art critic and art curator) and Donatella Saroli (Assistant to the Artistic Director/Research, Curatorial Office, MAXXI).

Reflecting Women is the first solo show in Italy by Kristina Inčiūraitė which gathers together a wide selection of videos and installations based on the issues of transformative female identity. The exhibition opens up a deep reflection on the process of becoming a woman, highlighting the social concerns related to it.
Reflecting Women is organised by AlbumArte, Latitudo Art Project and Kristina Inčiūraitė’s Studio. Supported by the Lithuanian Council for Culture, i-Portunus (a project selected and supported by the Creative Europe Programme) and the Lithuanian Culture Institute and promoted by the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Italy.

Kristina Inčiūraitė lives and works in Vilnius. She has exhibited in numerous museums, including the National Art Museum of China in Beijing, the National Art Museum of Ukraine in Kiev, the Oi Futuro Cultural Center in Rio de Janeiro, the Konstmuseum in Kalmar, the Łaźnia Centre for Contemporary Art in Gdansk, the ar/ge kunst Galerie Museum in Bolzano, the Kumu Art Museum in Tallinn, the Muzeum Sztuki in Lodz, the Műcsarnok in Budapest, NGBK in Berlin, the Casino Luxembourg – Forum d’art contemporain in Luxembourg, the Pori Art Museum in Finland, the National Gallery of Art, the Contemporary Art Centre and Mo Museum in Vilnius, etc.

Mariko Takagi lives and works in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. She is an award-winning whistler. For example, she has become a champion (adult division, female) in the international whistling contests several times in two years – at the International Whistlers Conventions in Louisburg, North Carolina, USA in 2013 and in Kanagawa, Japan in 2014. Mariko Takagi is a very productive whistler and performs in various national public events. It is almost impossible to count up all of them – she gives almost one hundred whistling performances in Japan each year.
