AlbumArte presents

(No longer) Anonymous women. A confrontation on femicide
Curated by Daniela Trincia

GET TOGETHER FOR ONE YEAR

Teresa Margolles
With the participation of Angel Moya Garcia

Monday June 5, 2017 at 7:00pm
AlbumArte – via Flaminia 122 Rome

Topic of the meeting: Testimonies of violence on silent individuals and on those victims defined as “collateral damages”

Artist Teresa Margolles (Mexico, 1963), together with Angel Moya Garcia, explores the causes and the social consequences of gender-based violence, of inequalities and of murder, as well as the socio-economic order that “normalizes” such violent acts, within the context of poverty and conflicts between drug traffickers in Mexico. Among the artists that have dealt with these issues the most, her works express a naked realism and firmly condemn such phenomena, showing the effects on the victims’ families, on communities and on the urban space. The spectator also participates in the families’ and communities’ grief and suffering resulting from the brutality of organized crime, shifting from an individual dimension to a collective and universal one.

In collaboration with the Real Academia de España en Roma and Associazione Culturale Dello Scompiglio.

Teresa Margolles (born 1963 in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico) is a visual artist, who examines the causes and the social consequences of death, destruction and civil war. The artist is well known for creating artworks focused on the themes of violence, gender and alienation. Her work criticises the social and economic orders that make certain violent deaths normal, transgressing social and artistic conventions and underlining the complicity of the government in generating violence and poverty. She has exhibited in numerous museums, institutions and international foundations. Among the major exhibitions: Dallas Biennial, 2017; Biennial of Bolivia, 2016; Neuberger Museum of Art, Acquisto, NY, USA, 2015; Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich, 2014; Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, Madrid, 2014; Principe Claus Fund, Amsterdam, 2012; Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC), Città del Messico, 2012; Museo de Arte Moderno, Città del Messico, 2011; Museion, Bolzano, 2011; Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel, 2010; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, 2010; the Venice Biennale, Mexican Pavilion, Venice, 2009.

The main aspect of his research is focused on the concept of identity, collectivization of individual and on the deconstruction of the subject in contemporary philosophy. Among the exhibition projects he has curated: “Sobre la sangre” solo exhibition of Teresa Margolles, co-curated with Francesca Guerisoli; the performance festival “Sui Genersi” co-curated with Eugenio Viola; “I can reach you (from one to many)”, a collective project co-curated with Pietro Gaglianò and Daria Filardo; “Acoustic Emergencies”, solo exhibition of Roberto Pugliese and “Spazio #06” solo exhibition of Gian Maria Tosatti at the Tenuta Dello Scompiglio; “Tensioni strutturali”, a project divided in three separate exhibitions at the Eduardo Secci Contemporary Gallery.
